Sweden's unemployment agency has been found guilty of discrimination for expelling a Muslim man from a job training program because he refused to shake hands with a woman. A Stockholm court Monday ordered the Public Employment Service to pay 50,000 kronor ($6,700) in damages to an immigrant from Bosnia who lost his jobless benefits when he was kicked out of the program. Citing his faith, the man had refused to shake hands with a woman when he was interviewing for an internship. The agency said his behavior was part of the reason he didn't get the position, and decided to exclude him from the program. The court ruled that the man was discriminated against because of his religion. It wasn't immediately clear whether the ruling would be appealed.

My wife has had orthodox Jews tell her, "I'm sorry, but I can't shake your hand" more than once. I don't get why this is any deal at all.

With the flu season about, it should be common that people refuse to shake hands.

Going back to the thread where i mentioned that i've had a Jewish man hint that he didn't want to do business with me (because i wasn't Jewish), i wish folks would just be more open about their prejudices and not merely hint at them. I have absolutely no problem if somebody says they don't wanna do business with me. I'm always more than happy to take my white sheet and hood off and pack 'em back into my 'David Duke for Governor' bag.

When I was wrestling in high school, I lost my first match of the season in the state finals (I had a 23-0 record at the time). Earlier in the state tournament, a wrestler who lost his semi-final match was disqualified from the tournament for refusing to shake hands after he lost a close decision to his opponent. Because it was a semi-final match, he would have automatically dropped into the consolation bracket as a high seed and a chance to take 3rd place. However, because the referee disqualified him for flagrant misconduct (he also called the referee something derogatory), the person he beat in the quarter finals was revived and sent to the consolation bracket.
After I lost the state championship match by a score of 6-3, I was pi$$ed at my performance and threw my headgear. The crowd booed.....loudly (especially our primary rivals). I then turned, shook my opponent's hand and said, "nice match." The referee raised his hand in victory. After the match, the coach from the team that had the wrestler who was disqualified (our conference rival) complained that his wrestler was tossed from the tournament and that I should be as well. I heard the referee say, "The only person he was mad at was himself. He congratulated his opponent on the win and unlike your wrestler, he shook his opponent's hand." On the victory stand, the winner stands on the top stair, the runnerup the second stair, and third and fourth placers on the lower two. At that time only four medals were awarded (the tournament had 16 brackets). These days they have 6 places. When I was announced after my second place medal, most of the crowd soothed after I hugged my opponent on the victory stand - except the rival crowd..........their boos were louder from the cheers of a very large crowd. As the smarta$$ and ham I am often known to be, I blew a double handed kiss to the rival crowd that was booing. |

On the subject of the Bosnian Muslim in Sweden, did the job description require the person be a Public Relations sort who has to greet people - perhaps shake their hands or given them high fives - on a daily basis? Including women? If so, then the termination from the program would be appropriate. If not, they should have respected him to some degree (unless he was an impolite nasty jackass).
I remember when shaking hands with women was sort of a taboo thing for men - because of that, I still feel out of place shaking hands with a woman. Traditionally, a American man only shook hands with a woman if the woman offered the hand first (the man was not supposed to initiate it - I have no idea why, just rules of the times I guess). Now you could greet with a hug and a smooch, or kiss the lady's hand, but no handshake........handshakes were for the manly sort. |

ESPN was just kicking off, just getting off the ground, and I thought that's what I was going to do in life, is be one of the first woman sportscasters. Until I learned that you'd have to move to Bristol, Connecticut. It was far away. So instead, I had a daughter and named her Bristol.” but she's no idiot. |
