Shooter Had History Of Mental Illness, Police Say
POSTED: Sunday, April 5, 2009
UPDATED: 8:00 am EDT April 6, 2009
CASSELBERRY, Fla. -- A woman with a history of mental illness shot and killed her 20-year-old son before killing herself at a Casselberry gun range, police said.
Marie Moore, 44, of Altamonte Springs, shot her son, Mitchel Moore, before committing suicide at about 4:20 p.m. at Shoot Straight Gun Range & Store, which is located on U.S. Highway 17-92.
"She ran out to get more ammo and went back in real quick, and all of sudden they were both down," witness Jim Copertino said. "(They were) both very anxious and hyper ... and then the shot happened right after that."
"Something went wrong. Literally, it was like a movie. I saw the man fall in slow motion. You knew he didn't have a chance. His life went just like this," said witness Bobby Davidowitz while snapping his fingers.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has a database of people declared mentally ill or unfit by a court of law, and it's used to screen permits when people apply to purchase a firearm.
The state does not check, however, to see if gun owners have mental health problems when their licenses are renewed.

well there wouldn't have been enough room in the tub for her to drown herself afterwards.

moronic copycat. they've stopped gun rentals for the time being.
CASSELBERRY - Jason Kevin McCarthy, 26, was at Shoot Straight on U.S. Highway 17-92 about 11 a.m. Monday and asked about renting a gun, Casselberry police Officer Joseph Nas said in a report that has just been released. McCarthy was handed paperwork to fill out, "but he stated he had something to do first and left the store," Nas wrote.
He came back about 5:40 p.m. and that time he filled out the paperwork and rented a 9mm handgun.
No one saw McCarthy shoot himself, but the suicide was verified by a surveillance video, police said. Employee Adam Schulman told police he instructed McCarthy on how to safely use the gun and watched him shoot at his target on a monitor for about five minutes before turning to wait on a customer.
He said he realized something was wrong when another customer pounded on the glass and told him McCarthy had shot himself.
That was William McNeely of Longwood, the only other person on the range at the time.
McNeely said he noticed a pair of safety glasses on the range and when he looked back he saw McCarthy on the ground bleeding. After pounding on the glass to get the attention of employees, McNeely unloaded his weapon and left the range, he told officers.
Katrine Zorn, the first Casselberry officer on the scene, entered with Lt. Dennis Stewart and found McCarthy with the gun still in his right hand. He was disarmed and paramedics were called. Although rescue workers said McCarthy had a weak pulse when they first arrived, his injuries "were not conducive to sustaining life," Zorn said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

I don't know if more of this is happening now or not.
It's for sure that the anti gun media will report it if it happens now, since the people are in place to take our guns. It's a way of swaying public opinion.

they should run background checks on the people renting guns. i've rented a 9mm from there before. you have to fill out a questionaire, but it's essentially pointless since they can't verify what you have told them.

You're right, dis-arm the 82nd Airborne, they jump out of perfectly good planes.

I don't think crazy people should have guns.
Why do you think that conservatives have them and most liberals don't?

I don't mean crazy as in "I disagree with you", I mean crazy as in "I'm going to shoot my son and then myself". I don't mean crazy as in "I'm jumping out of a plane and defending america" I mean crazy as in "I'm going to go shoot up Virginia Tech" crazy.

It was a joke.
I've found that most people don't get jokes on the internet now a days.

I was joking as well. Jumping from a perfectly good plane is normal and those that don't do it are crazy.

I don't think crazy people should have guns. I don't have a problem with a person having a gun and shooting himself if he's crazy.
....just shooting somebody else first then turning the gun on himself, that's where i have the problem.
