Fourth-graders:

_66 percent understood the symbolism of the Statue of Liberty

_35 percent explained how two inventions changed life in the United States

_24 percent explained why people settled on the western frontier

Eighth-graders:

_64 percent identified an impact of the cotton gin

_43 percent explained goals of the Martin Luther King Jr. march

_1 percent explained how the fall of the Berlin Wall affected foreign policy

12th-graders:

_67 percent identified an important Great Society idea

_36 percent identified immigration pattern and explained its causes

_14 percent explained a reason for U.S. involvement in the Korean War

_75 percent knew that only citizens can vote

_41 percent identified the level of government that signs peace treaties
_14 percent recognized that defendants have a right to a lawyer

Eighth-graders:

_80 percent identified a notice for jury duty

_63 percent determined an instance of abuse of power

_28 percent explained the historical purpose of the Declaration of Independence

_72 percent analyzed a historical text on the importance of education

_50 percent identified the outcome when state and national laws conflict

_43 percent described the meaning of federalism in the United States
