Some photos that surfaced on the Internet revealed a darker side of the recent Iraq war protests in Portland.

Photos taken by Rachael Palinkas, a Linfield College student, showed masked protesters burning an effigy of what appears to be a U.S. soldier in the Park Blocks.

Thousands marched in Portland downtown streets Sunday to protest the fourth anniversary of the start of the war. As the march along 24 blocks ended, a group of young people led police on bicycles, horses and motorcycles through downtown.

A few scuffles broke out, with police using pepper spray at one point, and several people were led away in plastic cuffs.

The photos showed protesters gathered around a figure wearing U.S. military fatigues and a crude skull for a head as it and an American flag were lit on fire.

Other black-clad, masked protesters carried a black banner that read, "No Gods, no country, no masters," and a circle A anarchy symbol.

Palinkas went to the protest march Sunday because some friends were going and she thought it a good opportunity to snap photos.

"I was shocked! Cause I haven’t seen anything like that before, you know, so I was kind of scared and confused like, ‘what's going on who are these people?’ I'd never seen anyone burn the American flag or any act of burning an effigy."

She published the pics Sunday on her Facebook account. The Drudge Report grabbed it Wednesday and it took off nationally.

She's received dozens of email in angry reaction to publishing the photos.

“They and their friends are not anti-war: they are for anyone opposing this country,” one viewer wrote in the Vanguard blog, where the photos appeared. “The people they hate most are the American soldiers (whom they term “mercenaries” and in a different era called “baby-killers”) who dare bring freedom to an oppressed people under our flag.”

There was no word on the identity of the protesters.

These guys aren't your average leftists. This is the first flag burned in America in years. It doesn't matter anyway, and it doesn't give justification to the war, or bring 3000+ dead soldiers back. I don't judge rightwingers by McVeigh.

This is truly sad. Any intelligent being would not associate these people with anyone other than anti-Americans. Soldiers follow orders. I love how anyone with a camera or any publicity can say and do things such as this without repercussions. Conversely if someone speaks out against a sin they are branded a hater by the media. I cannot speak for the scared sheep like masses, but I would not stand by and allow this to happen. When will America stand up and fight together? Let us not forget what America haters are capable of. Even if your the biggest conspiracy theorist out there you should realize that people who will do these things will also conspire against "US".

You've opened a can or worms. IBC loses it whenever Fox news is mentioned. He'd rather stick with really reliable sources like CBS news and the New York Times.

Yeah, I choose to avoid Fox. I don't buy into that crap. The fact that they have the least informed viewers of any major news source ought to tell you something.
Dailykos is admittedly partisan. Many sources I read from Vegas comes from a clearly partisan source. I don't believe I have ever posted anything from Kos here. Not because I despise it, just because you all will.

My personal favorite is CNBC, or CNBS as I like to call it....One continuous running ad for the greed of people....Hot broads totin' stocks...Some fat bald guy leading the sheeple over a cliff....and a game show that oozes greed, where people open suitcases with dollar amounts....F*cking genius.

But really, it's the commercials (especially those after 10 pm) that tip you off on what kind of dopes that channel's ownership thinks their target audience is....

Look at the whole picture. They have several liberals on the staff. The fact that they don't give the standard leftward slant is what drives some people crazy.

But they are still far more reliable news-wise than the New York Times and CBS.

Liberals? Thats a frickin joke. They have a couple of moderates they use as punching bags. What, no comment about how Faux news viewers are the least informed of any viewers? You have got to be kidding me Vegas. More reliable news wise? Remember when they spent twice as much time covering Anna Nicole then Walter Reed? This was weeks after her death. They are a joke of a news organization.

You watch him don't you? Not saying that's where you get your news...

But that show is better than any I've seen tracing what politicians say back to what the said 2, 3, 4 weeks ago.

It's meant to be humorous, and they do some editing of some things, but a lot of times, they catch politicians in slip ups, change of hearts, and downright lies.

Now, I'm not going to argue there's some liberalness in that show. BUT. They mock the people in power. Right or left. And I've seen plenty of times where Stewart takes someone from the left to task.

That's what I love about Fox and other channels. They get by with saying outrageous things, but posing it as a question.

"John Kerry conceded election. Was it because he molests sheep?"

They're not saying he molests sheep, they're simply asking if it's potentially a reason.

Child sex trade? Goodness gracious.

It was meant in jest. I am not really claiming that he molests children, just thought it would go in the spirit of the thread. Now I know your party wouldn't want him if he was a homosexual. Thats ok, we won't take him any which way.
