Half of voting-age Americans say they would not vote for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) if she became the Democratic nominee for president in 2008, according to a Harris Interactive poll released Tuesday.
More than one in five Democrats that participated in the survey said they would not vote for Clinton. Overall, 36 percent say they would vote for the former first lady and 11 percent are unsure of their top choice.
Forty-eight percent of Independent voters also said that they would choose another candidate over Clinton, the poll, which surveyed 2,223 potential voters, states.
Fifty-six percent of men said that they would not vote for Clinton, while 45 percent of women said that she would not be their pick. In addition, 69 percent of those 62 and older said that they would not vote for Clinton.
Nearly half of the respondents said that they dislike Clinton’s political opinions and Clinton as a person. Fifty-two percent of people also said that “she does not appear to connect with people on a personal level.”

Nearly half of the respondents said that they dislike Clinton’s political opinions
5% of these people could name more than five political issues that had been debated on the floor of the Senate over the last six years.
10% of those remaining could name Clinton's stand on each of those issues.
The average American voter is dumb and spends way too much time going to opinion TV and maybe reading an editorial or two for their information.
There needs to be a basic test that you should be able to pass to vote (They could make it ADA compliant). They also need to eliminate straight ticket voting.
Granted, most candidates I prefer would lose under these rules, but maybe it create a new type of candidate to chose from.
Right now, I'm fairly certain I wouldn't. I don't think this country was founded so that essentially 2 families run the country for 24-28 years. New blood and new ideas are needed from both sides.
But in the end, it would depend on who she's running against.

I will not vote for Hillary unless NC is a swing state and she is opposing the Republican. We cannot have another Repub in the WH now. I will vote Denny Kucinich!

What if the Republican is Rudy? Would you vote for Hillary over him?

And the race is close and NC will matter? Yes, but my teeth will hurt from the grinding.

just another in a sad sack of nominees/potential nominees that both parties keep trotting out for us to have to choose between. truly frightening.
So...I guess 50% of adults wouldn't not vote for her either.
Sounds like she has just as good a chance as Gore, Bush, or Kerry.

Democracy would still be in effect. The extra drama you add with that line doesn't change the fact that everyone would have the right to vote, if they knew what they were voting for.
Taking time to educate yourself about your vote should not be dependant on class or political beleifs.
I firmly believe most of our sensationalized, divise, innefective political culture today arises from uneducated voters that have simply latched themselves onto an easy to inderstand title.
If it took something like an exam (heck, I'd even offer it in multiple languages or in oral form) to get people to realize what the hell they are doing, I'd be for it.
Either that, or require some sort of Continuing Civics education. In fact, I think I like that more. To retain voting privilges, you must take a 4 hour civics class every two years. This class would go over their current representatives and currculum would be drafted by a multi-party committee.

I don't disagree with you about the existence of a problem, but I do disagree that the government is in any position to force people to educate themselves.
I think that televised debates should be eliminated, actually. People typically don't learn about the issues, they discover who the better speaker is.
It is a citizen's duty to keep up with politics and to vote. But the question for me is, who's job is it to make sure that person fulfills that duty? To me, it is their own job.
The next question would be: who makes the test? One reason a civics test is so controversial is because the people who make it could be extremely biased. You suggested it be ADA-approved, which would probably not yield a consensus. But even if it was accepted, in 20 years it could be overrun by one specific party, despite the appearance of a 'multi-party committee."

The debates have been pretty bad all along. They pretty much come down to who can land the most effective punches.

For some reason, I still expect Gore to emerge as the dem candidate. Hillary has too much baggage and Obama is a rookie - and he also has a terrible name for the times. And he's black. Now it shouldn't be that way, but some people even in this day and age will still not vote for a man because of his color or ethnic heritige. Or a woman for that matter. I would guess that Colin Powell would face the same uphill battle. Now I wouldn't vote for Obama or Clinton because I despise their political agenda. But I would vote for a Powell. And perhaps a Liz Dole or other conservative woman.
I suspect the dem candidate will be running against Rudy or McCain. I find Rudy way too liberal for his party but would vote for him in a heartbeat over the current crop of dems (I'm a McCain supporter - John is.......well, old). I would suspect that Rudy would grab a more conservative type from the west (we westerners are not exactly fond of the eastern libs running things alone). Perhaps, California's Duncan Hunter or someone like that. By the way, Duncan is one of the few men on the Hill that has a son who served in Iraq or Afganistan (his son is a captain in the Marines who served in Afganistan, and then Iraq). Duncan himself is a decorated war veteran (two Vietnam tours of duty) like McCain (and a good pal of McCain - I have no doubt those two would run together).
But I would vote for Rudy against the current crop of dems. The question is, can Rudy get the nomination in the south and west?

My uncle knows McCain and says the image he has with a lot of people (including myself) is wrong. My uncle says that he's a very honest & capable guy that would make a good president. I just can't see him that way, though. To me he takes too many positions just to make sure that he'll be on the Sunday news shows.

It is all a popularity contest at this point, which is the worst thing possible. Right now I have no opinion on who to vote for, it is way too early to make any decisions, but the people who say they are deadset on voting for so-and-so because of whatever reason is just being led by popular culture.
My little sister, who will be voting for the first time in this election, told me she would vote for Hildog. I asked if she knew anything that Clinton stood for, and she said no. She is voting for her because Hilary is a woman and Oprah supports her. Total BS and if it comes down to that idea when she goes to the polls, I will tie up my little sister and leave her in the garage until the election is over.

I don't see that as the reason we have our current president, I think Bush won the second election based on lack of a better option.
I will give you that is has been a pretty piss poor few years for the White House, but how difficult would it have been for the Dems to put someone, anyone, into the running that had some kinda intelligence, but also could keep the dumb Americans pleased through his popularity.
Luckily, we will have 2 more options like that come the next election. It will be another "Lesser of two evils" kinda race where every flaw in the candidate's character will be pointed out, and the election will be based on that. So far it is between a chick who got cheated on by her husband and a black guy with a recognizable last name that necessarily will not help him. Who else do we have? The ex mayor of NY who captured America's heart during the 9/11 fallout or an ex military guy who is infatuated with steroids in sports.
I am almost hoping Gore runs again.
