Maggots have been used to cure patients suffering from the hospital superbug MRSA, scientists have revealed.

Greenbottle larvae were applied to infected wounds to munch their way through the damaged tissue and in trials the treatment was a success in 12 out of 13 patients.

Researchers from the University of Manchester used maggots to treat diabetic patients who had contracted MRSA in foot ulcers, but scientists say the treatment could be expanded to fight MRSA infections in wounds all over the body.

Maggots and leeches...

That's great. After nearly a century of horribly mismanaging our antibiotics we have a cure for a staph. infection, fly larvae will eat the decaying flesh away leaving a huge scar. I think the medical community should be commended for thinking outside the box on this one. And, by all means, whenever you don't feel well take antibiotics; they really are the answer to all of your problems and they don't hurt you...

There would be a scar there no matter what if the flesh has decayed. The problem with antibiotics would have occurred eventually, but I agree mismanagement accelerated the process.
