Arctic sea ice could break apart completely at the North Pole this year, allowing ships to sail over the normally frozen top of the world.

The potential landmark thaw - the first time in human history the pole would be ice-free - is a stark sign of global warming, according to an article Friday on the web site of the The Independent, a London newspaper.

"Symbolically it is hugely important," said Mark Serreze of the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center in Colorado. "There is supposed to be ice at the North Pole, not open water."

Last year, the fabled Northwest Passage opened as Arctic ice retreated more than ever before.

There is no land at the North Pole, but as long as anyone has looked, it has remained a giant block of ice year-round. Scientists have been watching Arctic sea ice melt more and more each year. But each summer in recent years, the amount of ice has gotten thinner and thinner. Each winter's freeze, therefore, results in a thinner pack that, this summer, could melt altogether.

"The issue is that, for the first time that I am aware of, the North Pole is covered with extensive first-year ice," Serreze is quoted by The Independent. "I'd say it's even-odds whether the North Pole melts out."

Russia and other countries, meanwhile, have been arguing over who has rights to the region's resources, including potential oil reserves.

Several studies in recent years have predicted that the North Pole could be ice-free within a few decades. Alarm has ratcheted up every summer as the ice gets thinner and thinner. In a study released June 10, scientist said the rapid meltoff in the Arctic could threaten permafrost in continental soil elsewhere above the Arctic circle in a warm version of the snowball effect.

Last summer saw a record melt of Arctic sea ice, which shrank to more than 30 percent below its average. Around the peak of the melt, in September, air temperatures over land in the western Arctic from August to October were more than 4 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius) above the 1978-2006 average.

"The rapid loss of sea ice can trigger widespread changes that would be felt across the region," said Andrew Slater, also of the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

not surprising-but if Global Warming is not in the Bible, don't expect some tools to believe it much less do something about it

From the gas emitted by the undersea arctic volcanoes that they just discovered had been erupting. Now it all makes sense.

I would think it would cause the freezing point to go down in degrees, but I'm not a scientist. I'm a thermal retention engineer.

Maybe you can explain to me why the arctic ice is melting even though the temperature isn't going up?

The only answer I've gotten so far is "Global Warming".

As far as your stereotypes go, stick them in your ass.

and as far as global warming goes, the facts CLEARLY dont matter on this board in regards to ANY subject that goes against your agenda, you just get more pissed off and say things like "stick them in your ass", "hippie liberal", "pussie democrat", blah blah blah blah.

It's gone from (from what I can tell) that the Earth isn't warming to the Earth isn't warming because of man's actions, but rather a natural part of a warming cycle now back to the temperature is the same. So I don't know if the temperature being the same is inclusive in the natural warming trend or not.

now its warming because the underwater volcanoes are heating the ocean, melting the north pole and warming the collective icy black republican heart.

I thought I pretty clearly pointed out that the earth's temperature on average is up since 1970 a total of 0.6 degrees Celsius, but that in the mid 90's it was up a full 1 degree Celsius. Over the past 12 years, the average tempearture has dropped 0.4 degrees Celsius. Why does this get brought up in about every thread? We had a good discussion on this in a couple of other recent threads.

A few things that somehow always find their way into nearly any discussion.

Religion
Global Warming / Al Gore
Fascism
Hippism
Nazism
Elitism

If history is any indicator, we probably won't really be on the way back down for another 2500 years or so. However, the time between ice ages isn't exact.

I answered an attack by commonman. Fahvra decided to attack me because of it. I didn't appreciate it and responded. Then Pnk weighed in with his 2 cents worth of nonsense.

weather temps are going down, maybe.

temperatures of the earth are going up.

I still think it is a natural cycle that will even out.

Instead, we have to keep acting like humans are unnatural and we should not be doing anything more than living in shacks in the woods instead of trying to progress in life.

In all seriousness, I thought the surface temperature of Mars was also increasing? Is this due to man made globull warming or is it possibly due to the increased activity of the sun.

A scientist in Marion, Illinois has come across a profound cause of global warming. Mr. Scientist(who speaks in condition of anonymity) studied different subsets of women and what he found was remarkable. "Women who walk with their legs tight together create a lot of friction that causes heat as a byproduct. On the other hand loose leg women actually create a cooling effect like wind blowing down a tunnel." Walking bow legged like your riding a horse might make you look like a tramp, but it helps to prevent global warming.

In another set of experiments he theorized that women who talk too much also contribute highly to CO2 emissions. "Talking and breathing heavy produces large amounts of CO2 and heat. Women who talk less and are less opinionated have a much smaller carbon footprint."

In reviewing the evidence one can only conclude that loose legged tight lipped women are all that can save us from the end of times.

Eh?

The Earth, what you walk on and under that, is going up in temp. The core is molten lava, and that is going up.

Not sure if that has any effect on the weather, but if the atmosphere is not getting hotter, like ryr is suggesting, the heat can be coming from below.

Does that make sense?
