GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday she sees her sometimes Southern accent as a virtue.

"I think America is ready for a multilingual president," Clinton said during a campaign stop at a charter school in Greenville, S.C.

The New York senator—who said she's been thinking about critics who've suggested that she tried to put on a fake Southern accent in Selma, Ala.—noted that she's split her life between Arkansas, Illinois and the East Coast.

Clinton added a Southern lilt to her voice last week when addressing a civil rights group in New York City headed by the Rev. Al Sharpton. On Monday, dealing with a microphone glitch at a fundraiser for young donors, she quoted former slave and underground railroad leader Harriet Tubman.

The two episodes prompted some ribbing in the media and hatched more than a few humorous YouTube video clips.

Clinton is a linguistic polyglot—a Chicago native turned New York resident who works in Washington and spent two decades living in Arkansas when her husband, Bill Clinton, was governor.

But observers have long noted her tendency to speak Southern primarily in front of black audiences, as she did with Sharpton last week and at a civil rights commemoration in Selma in March.

All the Democrats are vying for the support of black voters—a crucial constituency especially in the early voting state of South Carolina. In 2004, black voters comprised nearly 50 percent of the state's Democratic primary turnout.

Well...You don't see some sh*t like that every day...

I guess that's one step up from a cunnilinguist polyglot.

Trust me, the only person a mediot worships more than Clintoon is themselves, thus explaining the high level of douchebaggery flowing from their keyboard.

this just pisses me off. She is not even from the South and she only lived in Arkansas for 20 years at the most. I'm glad she is using us (Arkansas) to try and promote herself through the accent of Arkansans. If only she had done something good for the state then we could posssibly call it equal...

The point is that she is not a native born Arkansan or Southern and thus shouldn't use the southern accent to her advantage

I lived in AR for 8 years...when I moved back north, people could tell I had a Southern accent. It's something you develop without trying. It just happens.

Do you have a cajun accent now?

No. It's more about the people you're around. When I was in AR, I was around kids in school all day...all of which were Arkansans. Here, the people I'm around are mostly not from around here...boss is from IL, lab manager lived in northeast a lot, another girl from CT, one was from UK, another from OH, so not a lot of talking with a twang.

And really, very few people around here have a cajun accent...there's a few, but it's more towards Lafayette and other places more south than here.

The difference in accents between one end of IL and the other is like Brooklyn vs. Kentucky.
Those northern people talk funny.

But are you using your accent to try and pass off as a Southerner? John Edwards tried to do the same thing and people in the South criticized him too.

Yeah you were, you are from the South. She on the other hand is not a Southerner.

I'll mirror LSU's point. I lived in St. Louis for 7 years and sometimes I slip and say Missoura due to me brief exposure to people who live outside of the 270 ring. The manner in which people speak changes over time. Some partisan hack will be coming after me now....

Doesn't matter. Lets not talk about how the Director of the CIA under Bush has basically said he manipulated us into war! Hillary's accent is fake!!!!

Well, to me lying us into war and getting our boys and girls killed for a pack of lies is important. Hey though, the Clintons!!!!!

That's fine. We have many other threads that relate to the shortcomings of our current administration.

For the most part, they get less attention. I was wondering why that is, so I made a sarcastic comment about the Hillary-bashing. I mean, the director of teh CIA confirmed yet again the thoughts of many Americans, and it gets zero attention. Then I look at is getting attention and I am blown away.

Then start a thread regarding Tenet, or continue posting in the thread, or take it as the Conserves have no rebuttal and can't think of any way to credibly dispute it.

I did LSU, I did. Maybe they can't respond, maybe they can't tie it to Clinton, maybe they refuse to converse with me. I was trying to comment on this, mostly by saying it is ridiculous.

We have a guy from Keene-fuckin-bunkport who pretends he is a damn cowboy as our president. Yet somehow Hillary is not authentic at all????

This is a legit tangent for this thread. Much better.

I do find it hypocrytical to complain about Hillary playing southerner for "only" living there 20 years, while not pointing out Bush is doing the same thing.

When I run for office I plan to use a French Canadian Accent. Should get me places.

I use a Middle Eastern accent, just because I think it makes you popular with the values voters.

Thank you for pointing that out. I'm sure it's completely different to Republicans. I'm sure they can give you a very good reason for it.
