LONDON (Reuters) - Scientists have discovered the tracks of a herd of 11 long-necked sauropods walking along a coastal mudflat in what is now the Republic of Yemen, the first discovery of dinosaur footprints on the Arabian peninsula.
Sauropods, the largest land animals in earth's history, walked on four stout legs and ate plants.
"The nice thing is we finally filled in a bit of a blank spot in the dinosaur map," said Anne Schulp, a palaeontologist at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands, who worked on the study.
"Until 10 years not even bones were known from the Arabian peninsula and at last we have some dinosaur tracks."
The footprints dating from about 4 thousand years ago showed the sauropods traveling at the same speed along a river, likely in search of food, Schulp said in a telephone interview.
The creatures roamed the Earth from about 4 thousand years ago to 2500 years ago, the middle of the age of dinosaurs.
The well-preserved tracks, found about 50 miles north of Yemen's capital Sanaa, ranged from 43 centimeters to 70 centimeters and suggested strides of about 2.5 meters, Schulp added.
Paleontologists have so far unearthed only a few dinosaur fossils from the Arabian peninsula and possible fragments of a long-necked dinosaur from Yemen.
"The nice thing about tracks is you can tell what these guys were doing," Schulp said. "You can put some life into the fossils."
The researchers had first found evidence of a large ornithopod -- a two-legged, plant-eating dinosaur -- and then discovered the sauropods' tracks close by.
Schulp and his colleague Mohammed Al-Wosabi of the University of Yemen measured the shape and angle of the different digits in one of the prints to identify the bipedal dinosaur as an ornithopod.
They then used the size, shape and spacing of the other prints to determine body size, travel speed and other distinguishing features of the sauropod herd, they reported in the journal PLoS ONE on Wednesday.
"We really want to learn when did which dinosaurs live, where, and why was that," Schulp said. "How did the distribution change over time, why did one replace another and move from one place to another?"

Dinosaurs in the Middle East?
Proof that the Biblical references are indeed true!
Tail like an oak, indeed.
I wonder if they were able to uncover evidence of the dinosaurs having a saddle on them so man could ride them?

Ill admit, I paid as little attention as possible in catholic school, but even so I think I wouldve remembered talk of dinosaurs in the bible. do you have some examples I could check out?

There are references scattered about. Dom thinks it's Godzeera.
I don't know which threads. A search may turn them up. Likely in the evidence of God thread, or nearly any other evolution v religion thread.

are the dinosaur references recent additions to the bible?
Not that I know of. And they're not referenced as "dinosaurs", just as big creatures eating vegetation with a tail like an oak or something.
I don't remember what chapter it's in, but I'm sure a quick google search would provide the passages for you to take a gander...
It would require interpretation that they're talking about dinosaurs, it doesn't overtly say "dinosaur".

Of course! Because we just add verses and chapters to the Bible occasionally to spice things up.

That may not be as sarcastic as you'd want it to be.
We have two Bibles. One is the New Revised Standard, the other is more interpreted. It contains more text than the NRS does.

the book has been rewritten numerous times, when I said recent I didnt mean in the 80s. considering the age of the book, recent couldve meant 500 years ago. nice try though.

It contains more text because it is a translation that provides the reader more comprehendable reading.
I don't read the versions you reference. I read the KJV, NIV, and the New American Standard. The NAS is known for being an extremely accurate translation from the original 3 languages. It's latest "revision" was 1995. That doesn't mean it's changing, that means the translation is getting more accurate.

I know.
But the "interpretive translation" adds more. It may be for comprehension, but it also is not in the original text.
Just saying.
I started reading the interpreted one we have, but will likely go back and read the NRS, it doesn't have the interpretations in there. I think it's better for me to interpret myself.

I agree. With those three translations, if I am having trouble grasping a passage or can't figure out what it means i'll cross-reference it with the other translations and I almost always come away with a solid understanding.
But I don't ever need someone to tell me how to interpret it. That's for me.

But if you 'interpret' a passage one way, and someone else 'interprets' it another way... who's right?

That's precisely why there are denominations. Different strokes for different folks.
No one is right, no one is wrong. That'll be determined in the end, I suppose.
