The Justice Department approved Sirius Satellite Radio's $5 billion buyout of rival XM Satellite Radio on Monday, saying the deal was unlikely to hurt competition or consumers.

The deal was approved despite opposition from consumer groups and an intense lobbying campaign by the land-based radio industry.

Crossing fingers that Borders-Barnes & Noble is not next, but this does not set a good precedent.

I guess this means I'll have twice as many people calling me begging me to renew my xm subscription.

It was a pretty similar amount of time for both deals.

One of the main reasons we (Borders) could not be bought out by our primary competitor (Barnes & Noble) is becuase there are only two major Bricks & Mortar book stores. By them buying us out it could create monopolistic tendancies.

However, by introducing the argument that Amazon is direct competitor (which is true, but can be argued against) then you have a green light to put me out of work (I would not be willing to move to NYC).

This decision clearly means that the justice department today has a broader understanding of competition and between this and the Whole Foods decision things don't look good.
