So I was watching that home makeover show on ABC last night and this family that had lost the father to cancer a few months ago got a new home. It was a very heartwarming story, but I can't help questioning some things.

They had like 4 kids between 15 and 22 or something like that. They had this small house that got torn down for a huge mansion. Each of the kids got their own custom decorated bedroom. It had to have been 4x the size of the original house. So what happens in the next couple of years when all of the kids move out? This lady is going to have a huge house that she'll have a hard time keeping up. And this was in Wisconsin where the property taxes are insane. How is she going to afford to pay those?

The Michigan Legislature had to deal with that exact issue when they were in Michigan about a year ago. They somehow managed to give the family a free pass on the taxes and assumed the basis of their house to be the same as the one they torn down.

It was the same deal though where poor, poor family on Michigan's west side got a mansion in return for a shack. The shit hit the fan when they got their assessment for, like, $600K the next winter.
