View Full Version : A joke I heard
A little off-color, but I think a funny commentary on American culture
2 Iraqi families flee the war and come to the United States. Time passes and the families both are having trouble acculturating to American life. One Saturday night, teh men are playing cards just like they did in Iraq and discussing the adjustment to American culture. They decide to have a bet. In one weeks time they would both attempt to become as American as possible, and teh winner would get $20. A week goes past, and one of the Iraqis visits his friend. As his friend answers the door he says: "Hey buddy, I just got back from eating a McDonalds breakfast with my family, bought me a six-pack of Bud, and am just getting ready to watch some college football. What do you think of that?"
His friend looked him straight in the eye and said: "Fuck you towelhead."

Wow. After this one, what other ethnic groups is it ok to make slurs about?

So which groups?
Since I'm Irish, it's OK to pick on them.
What's the difference between an Irish wedding and an Irish funeral?
One drunk.

I think Irish jokes are funny. I don't think racist jokes are funny. Racial and racist aren't the same thing.

I had this discussion with a friend the other night:
Not funny (IMO):
Genocide
Pedophilia
Child abuse
Rape
Black jokes (as an example)
Any joke that sole purpose is to denigrate other people

Agreed. Only I include jokes to denigrate homosexuals too. I do think jokes about homosexuality are funny though.

Isn't most humor aimed at belittling or poking fun at an individual or group?
Whether they are in poor taste or not depends upon your point of view. Popular humor is democratic humor.

Poking fun and belittling are two different things. As is sarcasm or satire.
Irishmen walks into a bar and orders three Guinness. He drinks them alternating beers a drink at a time. Teh bartender says to him, "Hey, they would go less flat if you order one beer at a time."
The man explains,"these are for my two brothers, we moved to different places long ago, and we promised that when we went out drinking we would drink like this to remember when we were drinking together."
"What a great custom," the bartender replies.
The man becomes a regular and is well-liked at the establishment. One day though, he comes in and orders two Beers and slowly sips them. The bar falls silent. Eventually one of the patrons wanders over and offers his condolences.
"No, everyone is fine," the man replied, "I just converted to Mormonism."

As long as Ann Coulter doesn't say it, it's perfectly OK.

Again. Depends on what side of the fence you're on.
"Fence side" is rarely more clearly illustrated than it is on this board.

I think it's more complicated than that (at least to me). I think Irish jokes are funny. I don't think black jokes are funny. There is a big difference in attitudes in how they are told and accepted. I'm sure a lot of people will jump up and say that certain people need to not be so sensitive, but there is a lot more involved IMO.

If you belong to the KKK they are.

See, when Ann Coulter attacks 911 widows, it's not a joke. Or calling someone a faggot? That is not a joke, and if it is supposed to be she is an idiot.

There is some truthiness to that sentiment.
