Most of us can't outlive this fish...

Fishermen catch big, old Alaska rockfish

By DAN JOLING, Associated Press WriterFri Apr 6, 6:08 AM ET

A commercial fishing boat hauled in what may have been one of the oldest creatures in Alaska — a giant rockfish estimated to be about a century old.

The 44-inch, 60-pound female shortraker rockfish was caught last month by the catcher-processor Kodiak Enterprise as it trawled for pollock 2,100 feet below the surface, south of the Pribilof Islands in the Bering Sea.

The Seattle-based vessel, owned by Trident Seafoods, pulled up an estimated 75 tons of pollock and 10 bright-orange rockfish.

Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle measured, photographed and documented the fish. They removed an ear bone, the otolith, which contains growth rings similar to rings in the trunks of trees.

They estimate the rockfish was 90 to 115 years old.

That's toward the upper end of the known age limit for shortraker rockfish, said Paul Spencer of the science center. Other estimates put the fish's maximum age at 157 years, Spencer said.

The contents of the rockfish's stomach were examined and scientists took tissue samples to measure her reproductive potential. "The belly was large," Spencer said. "The ovaries were full of developing embryos."

Scientists said the specimen is not the biggest on record. A 47-inch shortraker rockfish was recorded, according to the book "Fishes of Alaska."

We cannot outlive trees either. I do not think that life span is a product of advancement. We can only live for +-120 years for a reason.

"Advanced" could certainly have many meanings. Mine would lead more towards mental capacity and/or brain development. We're the only species I know of that can change our environment to suit our needs rather than nature changing us to suit its needs.

So pollution suits our needs? It is a change in environment. Animals can build houses.

So now there are a few less rockfish in the world?

To an extent, yes. The end product (pollution) may not suit our needs, but the reason the pollution is made (oil for heating, electricity for keeping things cold or hot, or entertaining us, etc) certainly makes our environment more hospitable.

Animals certainly can build houses...with supplies available within their immediate environment...

I can go buy wood to build a house that came from the other side of the country, if it suited my desire. Or brick for that matter. Animals also can't lay pipeline from the ocean to warm their huts and nests...they can insulate...but must rely on body heat as a heat source. We have a furnace.

Wrong. Those rockfish never were...they were developing, not complete.

I meant they will never be complete....are rockfish a rare fish?

Not that I've heard. I'm not much up on my arctic species, though.

[QUOTE=swordfish;2998] We can only live for +-120 years for a reason/QUOTE]

What would that reason be? Outside of desease and cell degeneration, which are things that will be dealt with over time, is there a reason?

Tomorrow I will ask God.

And who would really want to live longer than 120 years anyways?

Dick Clark. The more New Year's celebrations he leads, the more his legend grows. And his plastic surgery tab.

If there was a procedure that would mean one could live a healthy 180, I'd be the first to sign up. For those of us that don't belive in God and feel we just go into the great organic recycling bin, like me, we'd like to get the most time of existance possible. The key, of course, is a healthy 180. Similar to how hundreds of years ago people couldn't imagine a healthy 50. I don't think adding 20 years to the average person has done us much harm.

Population expansion, lost of forest land, increased pollution, worse traffic, less land, etc.

Some might argue the above aren't a positive.

They were viable rockfish.

They and their mother were murdered.

Worse traffic is hardly a reason. That's just because of urban sprawl and poor public transportation. Easily fixed.
More pollution: again easily fixed but Vegas doesn't want to pay for it.

I'm pretty pissed about traffic. Being pissed leads to stress. Stress increases corticosteroid levels. Corticosteroids decrease immune function. Decreased immune function causes increased infections. Increased infections means increased hospital times, which means I might be taking a bed up in the ER and some guy dies of a heart attack in the waiting room.

All because of traffic.

Then do like I do.

Get a huge SUV, and when people act that way just say "Come and get some you son of a bitch!"

They'll move.

No stress.

So, it balances out. Natural selection. Those that don't take the bus or train and sit in traffic and get stressed will die early, leading to a proportional increase of people who are environmentally conscious giving them more breeding opportunities. Tree huggers will inheret the world.

Yeah, that's like inheriting a cherry Mustang. Except grandpa shit his pants in it everyday for the last 6 years of his life because he didn't think shit would soak into the interior.

good thing they killed it for study

i mean, thats what i recommend with rare finds...

our oceans are sick and over fished, we dont need to kill off the ones still kicking

Where did it say it was killed for science? Perhaps it died whilst sitting on the deck while the fish were sorted...or something.

Even if you have an SUV, I am getting more and more concerned about the way people are driving....Twice in a week I was going over 70 in the left hand lane on the expressway and some idiot who thought I was going too slow drives on the shoulder to pass me....Last night on the way to the movie theatre some asshole in a larger SUV was tailgating me with their brights on...I just dont understand this type of animosity!

I visited Purdue for my masters work...the reason I decided not to go there was because I'd have to drive thru Chicago to get home. I hate Chicago.

this is true, either way, you think they wouldve spotted it sooner to throw it back.....many fisherman dont care, and unless they're cute like dolphins, most people dont get upset...

for years japan had annual dolphin hunts, when people found out, well, they put a stop to it (and rightfully so, they'd slaughter so many dolphins entire bay's would turn red)

I stay in the right hand lane for most of the drive...the middle lane if the right is too slow, and the left to exit...I also hate tailgaters....I leave like 5 car lengths in front of me...someone slams on their brakes on the expressway while youre tailgating and youre a goner!
