Semitrailer driver arrested in Williamson County

WILLIAMSON COUNTY — Officers of District 22 and Zone 7 of the Illinois State Police discovered more than carrots in a semi-trailer at the weigh station on Interstate 57 south of Marion in Williamson County.
The truck, carrying a load of carrots en route to Ohio, was determined to be overweight during a routine weight check. A search of the vehicle resulted in the officers finding approximately 761 pounds of suspected cannabis hidden in the load of carrots.
The Secretary of State Police Bomb Squad was called to the scene to examine a bundle that had a suspicious looking device within it which caused concern about a possible booby trap. The item was inspected and declared safe.
The driver of the truck, 28-year-old Magdaleno Valdez of Hidalgo, Texas, was arrested pending formal charges by the Williamson County State’s Attorney. Valdez is being held in the Williamson County Jail.
The investigation is continuing by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Illinois State Police.
