This is from the documentary Jesus Camp. I have recommended it before on here, just saw it again at a friends house.

I watched this movie about 6 months ago and it is crazy the things that you can get a kid to believe if you tell it to him enough times in the right context. Honestly, the only difference between belief in god and belief in Santa is context. You tell a kid about santa at 2 years old and you tell him about god at the same age. He stops believing in Santa at 7-9 because other kids tell him so, but he keeps hearing about god so he keeps believing and will until he stops hearing the nonsense.

I think HP went a bit far in his Santa comparison, but the indoctrination of our nations youth as seen in the movie is disgusting IMO. Really scary stuff. have you seen it?

I watched a couple of the clips. I'm assuming that these kids' parents have full knowledge of the activities happening in these camps and approve. Maybe I shouldn't.

I guess I'm still more comfortable with kids being "indoctrinated" into a Christian lifestyle than the one promoted by the popular culture.

I think you should see the movie. These people aren't Christians.

I don't have to hope. It is very clear to me. And, honestly, once you allow yourself to read that 2,000 year old tome you call The Bible as NOT the absolute truth you will see all of the flaws that are inherent in its text and you'l start to come around to the right way of thinking. Good luck.

Agape.

I'm going to abide by the recent ideas of this board and I'm going to ask you for meaning. We are trying to eliminate the types of "zinger" type posts that this post represents.

Great. Fight extremism with extremism.

That's some great inspiration she has to start the camps..."That's what they do in Pakistan!"

"Zinger"? Hardly.

Agape refers to a self-less love for others and putting other's needs and welfare above your own, such as is often shown in a healthy family. This is in contrast to what I often see valued by the popular culture.

Meh...I'm not convinced what's being taught in that video is anywhere near agape.

Christian militancy?

Should be an oxymoron, but sometimes is not.

Would you characterize the people who undertook the production of this film to be Christians?

Well, I wouldn't go that far. I didn't see them doing any weapons training, but in the interview portion, she seemed to be in awe of how they were doing it "over there."

All I can go on is the video, and what I saw doesn't look real nice. But, I've never met any of the people, either. So for all I know, they could be the nicest people in the world coming out of that school. It's hard to say, really.

Thanks for the nominclature. I grew up next door to a church that my family didn't attend, we were mostly atheist, yet we shoved their huge corner walk for over a decade. Not because we valued the church, but because we didn't want the old people who went to the church to slip and fall and we knew that the church couldn't afford to have the sidewalks sholved...

I grew up not believing in God, and serving a house of God better than it's servants could. Agape indeed...

I agree that there are plenty of people who get it wrong.

Not to "puff up" my church, but instead to show you where I'm coming from, the last two weekends consisted of:

1) During a large celebration day in the town (parade, shopping, etc), our church provided ice cold bottled water and donated the church building and parking lot (they rent) for free to the community.

2) The following weekend, they provided a free carwash. No donations accepted. Hot dogs and drinks provided for free as well.

3) Also helped to give away backpacks stocked with school supplies to underprivileged children.

Again, it doesn't matter that it was my church, I'm just trying to say that Christianity is supposed to be about giving. Unfortunately a good number of congregations have forgotten that agape love is one of the two most important commandments.

I'm afraid I'll be talking to the wind about the stuff in that video. Whatever I will say will be trashed. However, the people who directed that movie obviously took the most shocking parts of what was going on and piled it in a way to make fun of Christianity.

It is no surprise it was nominated for awards. Hollywood loves anything that flips the bird at Christians.

I didn't take the movie (the little bit that I saw) as making fun of Christians. Extremism (if that's what it is) is no laughing matter in any situation.

Shenanigans on this post.

My old man, who hasn't seen a church in 45 years since they told him he was going to hell because he ate a hot dog on Friday, is my guiding light on this subject. Very simply, he states that religion is a good thing because it makes a lot of people happy...For some it doesn't, and then you don't have to take part, like he hasn't....and it is as simple as that. Happy = good, so long as happy doesn't infringe upon your rights...and it doesn't in this country.

I'll buy that pops.

They still could be nice people coming out of there. I definitely disagree with most of what they're doing, but I'm not sending my kid there, so...

I would be curious to know if any of the Christians here (or non-Christians I guess, but I think I know that answer) would be comfortable with their children going to that camp.

My daughter is too young, but by age 14 I would have no problems sending my child there.
