Whooaa Nellie, have you seen all those blue Indiana “In God We Trust” license plates popping up like chicory everywhere you look? What do we mean when we say “In God We Trust”?
How about this? — Boy, aren’t we lucky that God liked white Europeans so much that he gave them an enterprising Columbus with trusty horses, gunpowder and cannonballs! He didn’t seem to favor the Native Americans as much. (But he’s making up for that now with the casinos.) He gave us a richly forested and fertile land and the Negro (with those wonderful spirituals) to do all that hard, early work. God doesn’t seem to be favoring their native Africa these days very much (or Russia, Asia, the Middle East, South America, the Caribbean, Central America, the Arctic and Antarctic, etc.).
Does not “In God We Trust” (IGWT) say that America is a blessed nation and people? To start with, we can see that America is blessed with zillions of cars and trucks and zillions of miles of pavement. But why did God put most of the oil so far away and make it rather troublesome to obtain (the “Iraq difficulty”)? And why is God allowing countries like China cars when they have so many people? And why is God allowing pollution and dwindling resources, and allowing the animals and plants to disappear? This is all puzzling. But you have to admit that God has a sense of humor; why else would he try to trick us with all those fossils?
But when one door closes, another opens. God also gave America NASA. This Earth may not be as nice as it was, but there are probably lots of other Earths out there just waiting for Columbus astronauts to discover. And like America’s surrounding waters, it would be real tough for the riffraff to get out there later on after the new America is established. Let’s just be sure those astronauts are packing serious heat.
Another reason why IGWT is that God has given us lots of televangelists, radio preachers, priests, rabbis, imams and popes to let us know that there is a better world awaitin’ for us, an Eternal Heavenly Sky Pie, so it doesn’t matter if we mess this one up. We can be saved and get to heaven. Praise the Lord (or her Lordship, as the case may be).
IGWT may be a puzzle, but can there be any doubt that America is blessed? There may be wars and rumors of wars, but look at who has the mightiest, handiest and most used military in the world. The poor may always be with us, but look at who has the most and dandiest prisons in the world. And why does God allow so many terrorists now, so soon after Communism went kaput? It’s a puzzle, but when one door closes, another opens. God has also given us citizens more trusty guns than any other people (and the blessed Second Amendment) to protect our households. Praise the Lord/Lordess and pass the ammo! God may allow a lot of shootings in America, but when you figure in all the gun manufacturers, the gun trade, the police departments, the court system, the lawyers, morticians, cemeteries and newspapers — like the auto crash industry and the war industry — you’re talkin’ big business, lots of jobs and a big part of our GNP, are you not? So, praise the Lord/Lordess!
Things may seem messed up here, but just remember there’s NASA and outer space and best of all, heaven. It’s A Puzzle, But In God We Trust. IAPBIGWT for short. Maybe it would add something to put that on the license plates.
