I got my notice the other day...just like several retired Military members.
Starting 1 March 2011 your net pay will change from $*,***.** to $*,***.** monthly.
Average monthly income lost was $50.
That of course was after a cut 2 years ago.

Shared sacrafice. We're in a budget crisis.
No reason public employees (which include the military) shouldn't have to take cuts that private folks have been taking. (and I roll my eyes because I know very few private employees still being asked to take pay cuts. We're in an economic recovery now from everything I see.)
Seriously, that sucks, but I'm glad to see at least the idiots who won't touch the things that will really help (SS, Medicare, gov't contract bidding) are at least spreading their ineptness across everybody.

Well, what caused the decrease in pay was the expiring of a tax credit. Obviously that money has been determined to serve the government elsewhere. Went through this same thing before. Nickle and dime the Military and their retirees enough and you have money for aother social agencies.

Minnesota's very own convservative Michele Bachmann is proposing a cut to veteran disability payments
One of the key figures is Jeff Miller, Republican from Florida who is chairman of Veteran Affairs.

Cuts are bound to come and I understand that. I don't think this is a Republican/Democrat issue as from what I read in the Army Times both sides agree cuts need to be made. I don't agree with the reduction of what goes into a service members wallet. There is enough pork that can be cut from the Military budget without messing with their pay and benefits.

I fully agree with you. But the bills cutting the benefits are coming from the GOP signed off by the Democrats.

Is he proposing cuts or making them Non-tax exempt? I would bet the later. I get 10% VA disability and all that means is that they take 10% of my retirement pay away from my retirement check and the VA makes up the 10% I lost. I would assume if they removed my VA benefits the Federal Government would have to make up that 10% in my retirement check.

of course if a democrat cuts the military, they're gutting it.

I don't disagree with you at all, as mentioned both sides of the isle know cuts need to be made.

Agreed. Fortunately there is some Republican influence...
Seriously though. It would appear that both sides have realized the way the 1990 military draw down was conducted was a razor slash to the face to the military readiness of the Military. Yes, President Bush started the draw down after the Gulf War anticipating that with a limited threat from the Soviets we wouldn't need Brigade after Brigade of heavy armor. This thought process brought on the lighter forces you see in the Stryker variations today.
The continued cuts brought on after Clinton took office was what caused the term "Gutting" to come about.
