The U.S. command said Wednesday the highest-ranking Iraqi in the leadership of al-Qaida in Iraq has been arrested, adding that information from him indicates the group's foreign-based leadership wields considerable influence over the Iraqi chapter.

Khaled Abdul-Fattah Dawoud Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, also known as Abu Shahid, was captured in Mosul on July 4, said Brig. Gen. Kevin Bergner, a military spokesman.

"Al-Mashhadani is believed to be the most senior Iraqi in the al-Qaida in Iraq network," Bergner said. He said al-Mashhadani was a close associate of Abu Ayub al-Masri, the Egyptian-born head of al-Qaida in Iraq.

Bergner said al-Mashhadani served as an intermediary between al-Masri and Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri.

"In fact, communication between the senior al-Qaida leadership and al-Masri frequently went through al-Mashhadani," Bergner said.

"Along with al-Masri, al-Mashhadani co-founded a virtual organization in cyberspace called the Islamic State of Iraq in 2006," Bergner said. "The Islamic State of Iraq is the latest efforts by al-Qaida to market itself and its goal of imposing a Taliban-like state on the Iraqi people."

Must be tough spotting the "dark sheep" of the family.

I hope we don't expect roadside bombings and suicide bombings to stop anytime soon. I wouldn't 'be surprised if they start going up.

Unless we were able to snatch a guy every couple weeks or so, maybe even more frequently, we won't be able to put that much of a dent into their organizational infrastructure. When one guy goes down, theres another guy to pop up and take his place immediately. Our problem here is, intelligence doesn't develop nearly fast enough to attain that kind of frequency. Unless we could get their proverbial depth chart for each country they have members in.

It's like we're chasing our tail all the time. As fast as we knock 'em down they pop up with even more behind them.

But at least they're not coming here and killing thousands of innocent civilians.

It's better that they're killing thousands of innocent civilians there?

There are fewer innocent civilians getting killed there now then when Sadam was running things.

Saddam had 20 years to accumulate his killings.

It's been 4 since he was ousted.

What's the per year rate on those deaths?

Good question that will require more research. The mass graves they are still finding from the Sadam days add up to a whole lot of folks.

Admittedly a conservative source, but the number they come up with is 16,000 a year for the time period of 1979 to 2003.

You beat me to the punch.

The thing is, it's not good innocent folks are dieing anywhere, here or there.

I think some of what we're discussing right here coincides with the Evil discussion we've been having on the Religion forum.

Why do these folks kill so much even if innocent Muslims get in the way? They think they're doing right by Allah. But, does even the most Orthodox (not extremist) Muslim/Islamic church suggest such killing? Something tells me no. I think there's just plain pschycotic evil being spread to many very impressionable folks.

PROOF? You can't make a statement like that without any proof.

They are not killing indiscriminately in their own minds. They are doing it for a cause. A cause that is very deep in their own twisted minds. Anytime you let faith get in the way of logic and thought I think you are in trouble.

Many died from sanctions, but that is neither here nor there. 16k is a ridiculous number for sure.

Iraq body count can document 73611 since the start of the war. These don't take into account starvation and other things, like the numbers you posted do. I believe so anyway, since he says that sanctions caused some of the 16k, but that was Saddam's fault (kinda true).

If you want to count others dying from poor conditions, you are looking at more like 300-700k.
