The Los Angeles City Council this morning voted unanimously to "move full speed ahead" in urging harbor commissioners to offer a permanent berth for the USS Iowa battleship.

"This is a no-brainer for me," said Councilman Bill Rosendahl, who donned his Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 283 hat for the occasion.

"The Iowa belongs there," added Councilman Tom LaBonge.

The recommendation was introduced by Councilwoman Janice Hahn, who represents the Harbor Area.

"This would draw visitors from all over to the region," Hahn said of the historic World War II vessel now in mothballs in Northern California. "We should not pass this opportunity up."

Benefits to the city, she said, include jobs and revenue.

Robert Kent, president of the Pacific Battleship Center, a nonprofit group spearheading the proposal, said the organization has secured $8.5 million, the needed amount for the U.S. Navy to donate the ship.

An application - which needs the port's commitment of berth space for 10 years - is due Nov. 24.
