My big beef with these cars isn't gas, unlike most environmental and hardcore liberals...It's that they are dangerous for those of us that don't drive one....There WAS a day where some of these tanks wouldn't be allowed on the street. Why not eliminate the speed limit, if this is the case?

Curb weight on a hummer is 6400 pounds...On a mustang (hardly a "small" car)? 3450.

If I'm correct, Force = Mass x Velocity, right?

If that's the case, wouldn't a mustang have to be rolling at 130 mph to match the force of a 70 mph hummer?

W...T...F....

There's a reason semi drivers need a special license...and why certain souped-up cars aren't considered "street legal."

F*cking hypocrisy defined if I ever saw it.

Has anyone seen some of the damage these things cause in a wreck? Hot damn.

But, ah well, it's the "American" thing to do.....What a marketing sham........

So many reason why they felt inclined to buy one for "safety reasons"....Well, no sh*t....That's because you're surrounded by eighty tanks on I-95.

I'm sure that my demise will be some schmoe changing the radio station in one of these things, and sadly, he'll be OBEYING the speed limit....

Just because you chose to drive a small car doesn't mean you have the right to legislate me into one.

I've got a Santa Fe. It's been good, but with a kid and a dog, when we take a road trip, we'll be lacking in room...at least once the kid gets bigger. The mileage is fair...about 24-26 hwy, and we really only use it for distance traveling...the Civic is for in town...

But if that bitch starts running low on room...I may have to...mini...van...

Icky.

Just because you have a slow car, doesn't mean you have the right to legislate me into one, right Mr. GT? Where's the breaking point?

Rules are put in place for a reason...and I'll be damned if a car the size of a Hummer or a Yukon didn't require special licensing and additional fees in my youth, if allowed on the road.....

Furthermore, is safety a concern, as I suggested regarding damage caused by these things??? I thought safety was "an utmost concern"...at least, that's the answer any politician will give you....meanwhile his "assistants" are counting suitcase money from automakers in the back room.

No. You don't have to have a special license to drive a 40 foot motorhome.

An suv is no bigger than a pickup truck, which all of us contractors drive every day.

I trust most contractors to drive them. 5 foot 5 one hundred and eight pound soccer moms...not so much.

And you have to be able to drive the minimum speed or you won't get license for your car. It will be illegal.
See many scooters on the interstate?

Solid point. But the road is hardly littered with them.....Unless my eyes deceive me, is not the average truck significantly larger now than in, say, 1988?

Smaller, actually.

You bring up a good point...Anyone on a motorcycle is mincemeat on the highway these days if things go awry...with pretty much zero chance of survival...That's scary.

My dad's 1977 Chevy that was passed down to me was much much larger than his 1992 GMC he currently drives...longer bed, also seemed wider, too...

How that compares to a suburban or excursion, however, I don't know.

Is it really? Can I make it up on volume? :p

So, now that the size myth has been debunked for me...Is it really THAT important to have that much more room??? In sacrificing safety??? And for those of you who own an SUV and say to yourself (My safety is fine...I'm IN the SUV)...Vehicular homicide is no laughing matter.

Don't give up on the myth so fast. While the actually size (length, width) of the trucks may be smaller, what about the weight? Back in 77 they didn't have A/C and other such things...you look under the hood, it's quite open and most parts pretty well accessible...so there's some open air there...you look under the hood of the truck today and everything is packed in there TIGHT...so weight is important...so older trucks may be less dense (mass per volume) and new trucks may be more dense because they're packing more stuff into a somewhat smaller package...

What's more destructive? Higher density or lower density moving at the one particular speed?

Sounds like I have a possible cohort in this thinking....Soooo...Are you gonna protect the little one by caving and buying the big daddy...or are you gonna roll the dice?

(Sadly, that question is EXACTLY how I view it.......I'm rolling the dice with a 'stang and a Prius....as I can't stop driving...Our friggin infrastructure is built around it...especially in Florida...)

I'm not going to buy the big one. Like I said, we've got the Santa Fe now...it's not that big at all...bigger than most cars, but not a tank. I refuse to pay 35k or more for a vehicle and then pay $80 a pop to fill it up.

I may have a truck eventually, depends on how much I do around the house and how much capacity I need. But I'm not of the mindset that bigger is better.

But with that said, I'm not going to do any long distance travels in the civic...just not enough room. When I was a kid, my parents and I did all our road tripping in an oldsmobile. Nothing gigantic about those, just gotta use the space correctly.

I didn't realize a Santa Fe was an SUV....Traitor.

The old man used to road trip us to Arizona in his Cadillac Eldorado...F*cking boat of a car.

I wanted an Accord. Wife wanted a trendy SUV. If I can get at least 25 or so HWY MPG, I don't care if it's a family truckster...

But I'd much prefer to get 30+.

We've got the Santa Fe for a couple more years, we'll see what happens after that.

I'm less opposed to a minivan than I used to be.

Good point. A plastic bumper is what saved me from having more damage done in that vicious hit and run...but that was on a Civic...not a heavy duty machine to begin with. I think the Santa Fe bumpers are also plastic...

56 Chevy half ton 3217 lbs
63 Chevy K20 3890 lbs
75 Olds Delta 88 4480 lbs
76 Chevy Nova 3391 lbs

07 Chevy Avalanche 5478 lbs
07 Chevy Silverado 4211 lbs
07 Chevy Malibu 3174 lbs
07 Prius 2932 lbs

The new trucks are lighter than the boats of the 70s and barely heavier than the trucks from the 60s. I had a hard time finding any 76 truck curb weights. The Prius comes in just 242 lbs less than a malibu. Before SUVs everyone with a big family was driving conversion vans. At least SUVS are 4 wheel drive. I do agree that every soccer mom does not deserve to drive one. Careless people endanger others but thats no reason to take away rights.

i got nervous when i saw Vegas's dog driving him around

http://www.doglaw.com/Rollover_Rover_/dogdrivingunsafely.jpg

outside of that..well, i've read some problems where SUV's can do more damage to the car, especially with the higher clearence....

But I think to best get safe drivers is strict safety laws and high standards for all cars, which we pretty much have,

I dont like SUV's and I'm pretty sure I'll never own a car that averages less then 20mpg....but that is my choice...others want to, so be it...SUV sales are on decline..that makes me happy

I would imagine sales would be going down. Most people already have one.

Great pic, pnk. My dog about demands to sit on my lap and "help" me drive whenever he's in the car. I own an SUV and it gets over 20 mpg.

You are correct about the damage to cars in accidents. In an accident, the heaver vehicle always "wins" due to conservation of momentum (1/2 mv). The fact that they are generally heavier is much more of a factor than their height.

I liken people purchasing SUV's for "safety" to other countries trying to match us in nuclear weapons.

If ya can't beat em, join em.
